Developed in conjunction with Swim Smooth and Finis.
This is the perfect tool for coaches on poolside and self coached swimmers, a Critical Swim Speed Calculator that will tell you exactly what time you need to set your swim bleeper (we recommend the Finis Tempo Trainer Pro) in order to control your pace during threshold swim sets. The iPad version includes a fully featured stopwatch with lap splits and stroke rate capture functions.
Click on the Swim Smooth Logo in the App to find out our latest guidance on training at Critical Swim Speed.
Use the slider to adjust pool length, which then in turn adjusts the interval displayed in the image of the Finis Tempo Trainer Pro - the idea is that it will beep on that interval and your aim is to coincide your turns at each end of the pool with the beep. You wear the Tempo Trainer Pro under your swim cap close to your ear. (You can click on the image if you need to get a Finis Tempo Trainer Pro).
Use the sliders to adjust your respective 400m and 200m swim times, you can use the triangular buttons at either end to fine tune your times. Your Critical Swim Speed Pace is automatically calculated based upon these two time trials.
You can type in your name (or your swimmers name) and then take a screen capture if you want a record of the times and the calculations that you have made. To take a screen capture simultaneously click the home and the sleep buttons on your iPhone or iPad, the image will be stored in your camera roll.
On the iPad version you have the benefit of the Ergo Stopwatch (which is available as a separate App for the iPhone) on the same screen, so you can actually record the time trial swims and make your Critical Swim Speed calculations all on the same screen.
Whilst using the Ergo Stopwatch you can keep track of Stroke Rate at any time. The way to do that is click Stroke Rate Start as one hand enters the water, then click Stroke Rate Stop when the opposite hand enters the water for the second time. You might like to count each hand entry i.e. count "one" when you click start and then click stop when you count "four".
